No, that’s not profanity, simply the state of online content. DRM (digital rights management) has been killed by DAM (digital asset management). DRM was previously the standard that large studios and record labels used to protect their media. However DRM is being replaced due to its lack of scalability combined with outright user rejection. So what makes DAM so much better?
Digital Asset Management isn’t some kind of outdated proprietary software, it is a set of safeguards and content management solutions that will allow for content owners to maintain control of their media while still being able to distribute their content across a wide variety of syndication points. So what types of safeguards can DAM offer? One of my favorites is the Time to Live URL. This security feature literally ‘kills’ the video feed URL once the user has viewed a video. This type of media security used to be only available to large media firms, however, with the advancement of online video technology, mid and long tail content providers can now have the same protection as fortune 100 broadcasting companies. I’m excited to see these features hit the web soon.
